Goals
The basic goal of the Ph.D. phase of
the Programme is to provide training in
Theoretical Physics research, leading to the
completion of a Ph.D. Thesis.
Awards
The Programa Oficial de Posgrado in Theoretical Physics has been consistently awarded since its inception the prestigious Mention of Quality
by the Spanish Ministry for Education and Science (MEC). This distinction provides a preferential treatment to students applying for MEC fellowships
to fund their Ph.D. work within the Programme.

Admission
Candidates are generally expected to hold an official Master or
equivalent degree (e.g. a Spanish DEA). Notwithstanding, the
indispensable requisites for admission, according to
the R.D. 56/2005, 21st January 2005, that regulates postgraduate
studies, are having obtained
no less than 60 ECTS credits in a Graduate Programme, and a
total of no less than 300 ECTS credits in Undergraduate+Graduate
studies. In any case, the final recommendation regarding admission is issued to
the University administration by the Programme Committee, that will
study each specific case with flexible criteria.
Research lines and contents of the Programme
The Ph.D. phase of the
Programme does not foresee regular lecturing organised into
subjects. Voluntary assistance to specialised topical seminars in
Theoretical Physics, organised by the Department and the IFT, will
be recommended.
The Ph.D. Thesis should fall within one
of the following research lines, and needs to be advised or
co-advised by one of the professors participating in the Programme.
Existing research lines are:
Gravitation, Field and String Theory
Particle Phenomenology in and beyond the Standard Model
Lattice Gauge Theories
Nuclear Physics, Condensed Matter Physics and Statistical Physics
Neutrino Physics
Superstring Phenomenology
Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics
Experimental High-Energy Physics
Fundamentals of Quantum Mechanics and History of Physics
