| Field of research
The structure of the atomic nucleus is still far from being completely understood. This is mainly due to the lack of a
complete understanding of the strong force acting between the protons and neutrons in the nucleus and the difficulties
- from the theoretical point of view – to handle a many-body system with up to about 250 strongly interacting constituents.
During the last ten to fifteen years nuclear structure research has experienced a worldwide rebirth and the knowledge
of the atomic nucleus has not only been considerably extended but we have even been confronted with some real surprises
which forced us to change some of our well-established conceptions of this fundamental system. Right now, the next
generation of radioactive beam facilities is already within reach which will provide radioactive ion beams with higher
intensities and wider ranges of mass and energy. Considering that also improved instrumentation will be developed
in the near future everything seems to be prepared for an exciting future with many more surprises in nuclear structure
physics !
Current research activities of the group:
All experiments are performed at the accelerators of the Gesellschaft f ür Schwerionenforschung ( GSI ) in Darmstadt,
Germany, the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro ( LNL ) in Padova, Italy, the Grand Accelerateur National d'Ions Lourds
( GANIL ) in Caen, France, and ISOLDE at CERN. |
