Directions

The Cantoblanco campus of the UAM is located north of Madrid. It is well connected with the city center and the airport by public transportation. Workshop sessions will take place in Seminar Room C-XI-201, in the Department of Theoretical Physics.

Getting to and around the UAM campus

  • Getting to the UAM from the city centre: direct Cercanías services link the University (stop name: Cantoblanco Universidad) with Atocha (24 min), Nuevos Ministerios (17 min) and Chamartín (11 min) stations. Take northbound trains in line C4 (destination Colmenar Viejo or Alcobendas-San Sebastián de los Reyes). You can also take an interurban bus from the Plaza de Castilla Transport Switch (line 714).
  • Getting to the city centre from the airport: the best option is to take the Metro to Nuevos Ministerios (15 min), then transfer to other line to reach your hotel. A taxi may be more convenient if you carry bulky or heavy luggage.
  • Getting to the UAM from the airport: the fastest option is a taxi ride (15-20 min). Otherwise you can take the Metro to Nuevos Ministerios, then switch to Cercanías. You can also take an interurban bus (lines 827 and 828) in front of the arrivals area of Terminal 4.
  • Getting to the workshop venue: From the station or bus stop head for the Sciences building (Facultad de Ciencias; see the campus map). From the main entrance hall, take the corridor starting on your left to Módulo C-XI (Departamento de Física Teórica). The IFT is located in Módulo C-XVI, in the opposite corridor. Check out the plan of the Facultad de Ciencias.

The Madrid public transportation network

  • cercaniaslogo Cercanías: The commuter railway system links downtown Madrid to the metropolitan region. Ticket prices follow a zone system; most downtown stations are in zone 0, while the University is in zone B1. A one-way 0-B1 ticket costs €1.30, while a ten-trip card (bonotrén) costs €9.45. Tickets can be purchased at all stations; apart from coins, most machines accept notes and/or credit cards.
  • metrologo Metro: Madrid has an extensive and convenient underground train system. Tickets can be purchased at all stations; apart from coins, most machines accept notes and/or credit cards. Single trips (with any number of transfers) cost €1.00, while ten-trip cards cost €7.00. The latter are valid for urban (EMT) buses, too.
  • emtlogo Urban (EMT) buses: The EMT network (blue or red buses) is unified with the Metro network --- same tickets and prices, although no transfer between Metro and EMT is allowed within a trip. Tickets can be purchased directly from the driver (usually only small change accepted).
  • Interurban buses: Green interurban buses serve the metropolitan region. A number of them run from/to the University campus, and may be a convenient choice for certain connections. Tickets can be always purchased from the driver (usually only small change is accepted).
  • Taxis: Taxis are abundant and reasonably priced (by European standards). Rides to/from the airport to downtown Madrid or to the University can be expected to cost around €25. There are price supplements for airport (€5.25) or major train stations (€2.75) services. Fares are higher between 22:00 and 6:00.
